"Cookin Oil"

This album was recorded live in Matt’s Elsternwick living room in Melbourne, in Spring 2010, on the weekend of the famous drawn AFL Grand Final.

We five Pluckers got in a circle around good microphones and played our songs. This is our fifth album in 13 years, our first in 5, and our first that is 100% self-penned.

But what you will hear in this recording is the enjoyment of the Pheasant Pluckers in playing their music, the fun, the warmth, the sound. It took some cooking. A lot of time (years for some tracks) has gone into Cookin’ Oil’s writing, arrangement and production.

Matt juggled his singing and guitar with engineering and production. Keith played percussion, harmonica and sang his guts out all weekend. Dan was very happy in his chair and delivered sweet guitar lines for the two days. Peter not only played great banjo & some dobro, but was our professor of harmonies too. Rod played rock-solid bass, thought we’d lost him when he went red singing paint-stripper high harmony, but he came down OK.

Thanks to the generosity of Paul Cumming, Moana Kerr and Brian Fitzgerald, Dan and Matt played guitars far superior to their stage instruments, Gibsons and Martins mainly, all country approved. Thanks to Bron Burton and her two clones for the backing vocals on Under the Water. Thanks also to Tony Hargreaves for the accordion on The Daze.

So here is our newest. We hope you enjoy it.


If you want to hear passionate original Melbourne country, you simply can't ignore this band. Not quite sure how they do it but the Pheasant Pluckers make old time styles, like bluegrass, accessible to the younger generations by mashing it up their own way with Blues and Rock n Roll.

A big vocal harmony, heaps of delicious banjo and guitar solos with smiles all night, they love it. You'll get original songs that have stood the time test and some covers you might even know. With all acoustic instruments and a big upright bass sound, three sets of tunes are never enough for these guys....

Wow what a fabulous night guys, definately the best group we have had play over the 9 years of the awards dinners. Playing for the hospitality industry is no easy gig but you left them wanting more. Fantastic!

Hi Guys, just want to write and say that it was incidental that I happened to be a the Labor in Vain last Saturday (11th August) and what a great session you played. You are tight and your melodies and harmonies were sensational. As mentioned to you, it is the first time I have ever bought a CD at a pub gig. Looking forward to seeing you play again.

Hey Matt. Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed Friday night at the Selby Folk Club. It certainly is an unusual venue and we had never been before.

You should all be very proud of yourselves, the thing that always stands out with the Pheasant Pluckers, is they sound fantastic on CD and whilst live is always better for atmosphere etc, the music quality is always first class.

Thanks for a great night, maybe one day we will see you perform at Burrinja Gallery in Upwey. A fantastic venue, small licensed restaurant/cafe, a great space with a great feel. Check it out if you haven't already.

Hi Matt

Well the fabulous feedback on you guys just never stops. Some say it was like being at Tamworth! Just wanted to thank you for Saturday night. I have said it before and everyone keeps confirming it, you sound fantastic, recorded quality in a live performance. Even the teenagers are in awe!

The gig only comes around every two years because it's so huge. Maybe see you next time, it was our pleasure having the Pheasant Pluckers at our humble little School.
